Now that I’ve had the Palm Pre for a few weeks I’ve found some items quite annoying:

  • Undo Button – this weekend I decided to write something up in the “Memo” application so I could copy it out later.  The writing went OK – but when I went to copy the text over I clicked on the wrong thing and wiped out the whole memo.  That’s when I discovered there really isn’t an undo button (I even tried rebooting hoping it wouldn’t save…)
  • Copy and Paste is pretty rough – you can’t select text – it’s kinda all or nothing – like a URL,  the whole text of an e-mail, etc.  Doing more advanced editing isn’t very easy – something I miss from the old Palm OS
  • The battery life is not so great – as I sometimes have to charge during the day….
  • I occasionally get a “too many cards” error – even when I don’t have that many cards open…
  • The app store is decent – but not as robust as I had hoped – it looks like some developers are choosing not to release for WebOS….

Overall it’s still a good device with potential – and a major step up from my Palm Centro.

You know you’ve been a geek for a while when…

  1. You remember when adding a disk drive to a computer was a pretty major advance.
  2. You downloaded software from a bulletin board.
  3. You remember listening to the right tones when “dialing” up.
  4. You miss your handspring PDA (in fact your remember when they were call PDAs…)
  5. You remember the web when images were a luxury.
  6. When floppy disks were actually floppy…
  7. When you got a 286 and it was brand new – without a hard drive.
  8. Whey e-mail was new.
  9. You remember playing Oregon Trail on an Apple IIe at school.
  10. You know what 07734 on a calculator spelled upside down spells.

I was browsing autotrader.com the other day on my Palm Pre and I got this error message – apparently because the Palm Pre browser is based on webkit and so is Safari it based the error on that:

I just realized how much Facebook is integrated into my life now.  My dad just passed away (it’s still not real as we haven’t had the funeral yet) and I used Facebook to pass the word. In one sense it’s kind of freakish – as that’s an impersonal way to communicate.

For me Facebook was frankly a very efficient way to get the word out – to interact with people.  One of the reasons I like Facebook is that it allows you to connect with people in an easy way.   I can post one item about my life that’s share with so many people.  And it’s better than just a broadcast e-mail – as you can interact with each other.  I don’t want it to replace all relationships in my life – but it’s very useful for people who live far away.  This may make feasible to keep up easily with those friends that move away.

It may also appeal to the geek in me – which I got from my Father.  Writing something online seems so natural – so second nature now (isn’t that strange how quickly that’s changed).  Facebook also fills that asynchronous nature of communication – in that you can communicate with many people – just not at the same time.  That’s also why texting has become so popular – as you can better time manage your communication.

In some ways this makes the world so much more impersonal – but in others more personal.  I can understand the smaller items of your life by what you share – in ways we probably wouldn’t do otherwise.

This was pretty much a rambling – but that’s about the energy and intelligence I have this week…

Facebook is reportedly turning off app notifications from the news feed: http://mashable.com/2010/02/26/facebook-app-notifications-gone/

What would Facebook be like without these – more usable or something?  Of course, I wonder then if I’ll ever hear from some people – as it seems that’s all I see is app notifications (those I haven’t blocked yet…).  I know Facebook apps are money makers – but they’re kind of annoying.  If I see one more Fishville notification….

A friend shared with me a new Twitter account: http://twitter.com/COMMON_SQUIRREL At first glance this seemed pretty innocent and funny – but the part I don’t get is how this account is following other people.  If this is just a fun, but strange, idea what is the point of following other people?  Is something going on here?

I just realized today that a game my daughter was playing on the New York Philharmonic’s kids site is as powerful as a physic’s program on a Mac in high school.  I remember being over at a friend’s house in high school (probably about 1990, 1991) and playing with some physics program – things bouncing around.  That was cutting edge at the time – I think it was a Macintosh Classic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Classic) – because I remember you could carry it around.

Are we happier with technology today?  Someone linked me to this video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r1CZTLk-Gk

It’s comedy but it has a point – if technology is really making our lives better.  Are we satisfied or just wanting more?  Is it intruding our lives and making them better or worse?  You can’t question how amazing things are – they’re changing rapidly – so much more power and options.  I enjoy it a lot – but I question sometimes if I’m spending my time on what is best for me and those around me…..

Today I noticed a yellow pages sitting outside my door (not sure how long it was there).  I’m wondering if anyone still uses yellow pages?  I can’t think of the last time I looked something up in there.  If I want to know the phone number of a business I just look it up on the internet.  I don’t really look by category – but for a specific business.   I even have the internet on my phone so I can look up a company’s website and actually dial the number off their website.

Of course this is bad news for anyone in the Yellow Pages business – as if no one is using the thing businesses are going to stop advertising in there.  This may be another one of those examples of a disruption in the economy due to technology trends.  Of course if you make websites for businesses then it’s good for you – as that’s more how people find them.  I bet my kids might never look at the things as they grow up….

Right now CES is going on – showcasing the latest technologies out there – some pretty cool stuff.  You can actually go to http://live.twit.tv/ to see some coverage of the event.  I’m also watching a Star Trek the Next Generation episode and I can remember when it was the latest thing.  It actually hit the airwaves back in 1987 (over 20 years ago – suddenly I feel old).

One of the fascinating things about technology is how quickly it changes and becomes out of date.  I’m not sure we have the imagination sometimes to even know what the future holds.  Star Trek tried to do a good job of a lot of things – many of which still haven’t happened.  I’m waiting to see if Apple’s tablet will look like the ones in Next Generation….
