I wonder if we are on the brink of losing some of the quality of our news – of the in-depth reporting that traditional media has delivered. I find myself watching some news stories on twitter vs. reading an article in Time Magazine. I believe that media is changing – and changing toward a new business model. However, I’m concerned if there will still the in-depth quality we need to get good quality information – to make use think beyond the headline. View full article »

I’ve been surprised by how much I’ve enjoyed Facebook – for quite some time I was pretty convinced I didn’t need to go there. A friend gave me an invite and I was hooked. I’ve been surprised by how much I’ve enjoyed connecting with friends - especially those who have moved away. That’s always been a challenge for me – as when friends move away I lose total contact with them. I’ve tried to keep up with them in the past – but it’s never worked for me. View full article »
Sometimes it’s very difficult to balance your needs vs. that of your client. For anyone in small business you know there is never enough time to do everything you want/need to do. It’s a hard choice sometimes between continuing to work on their stuff vs. stopping to take some time for your own stuff. In fact as I write this I had to pull away from working on a client’s website – as I still had another task to do for them (even though I worked on things last night and today for them). I was thinking about possibly switching to Gmail as it might be nice to have access to my complete e-mail from anywhere. I was therefore looking at how to possibly to migrate my existing Outlook e-mail to Gmail. Then I got to thinking – I probably would want to backup my Gmail down to my PC – in case anything happened. But then I use a backup service (Carbonite) to backup my computer to the cloud (Internet).
So I would be going from the cloud to my PC and then back to the cloud… View full article »
While I have an iPod and I use iTunes I buy all my music from Amazon.com – because they are DRM free MP3s. I don’t want to mess with anything other than MP3 files (as they are universal) and avoid any DRM mess. The other cool thing about Amazon is that they have lots of free MP3s – which appeals to a cheapskate like me. You can follow them on twitter by #amazonmp3 – which notifies you of cool deals. Right now they have their 25 days of christmas – so snag you free songs now! (and maybe buy some in appreciation).
That said – now iTunes for songs is DRM free – so that’s a big relief – things will work well now. I understand why DRM exists – it can just be such a pain to work with. The main reason I use iTunes is that I’m addicted to podcasts (especially the TWIT network) and iTunes works so well with them – minimal intervention from me to get my podcasts…
Apparently that was a poor choice in settings I had for ping.fm – as I just realized it twitter’d a ton of posts that I was editing. I was thinking that I would ensure I had good categorization and tags on the posts – to make them more useful. However, when I did that it created a new twitter post each time – I’ve turned that setting off now.
Sorry about the volume of junk – I do mean to post something meaningful. Is this an example of unintended consequences or automation sometimes robbing us of understanding what we are doing?
I don’t know if I’m the only one who is getting overwhelmed by all this social networking. I started with Facebook for personal use – which I enjoy (that actually surprised me). In order to learn how I have a Facebook page for my business. I have this website as a blog now – to test out that concept – a site almost totally in wordpress.
I then created a twitter account in order to learn what that really is – as it’s all the rage now (maybe 140 characters or less matches our attention spans). I also have a Linkedin account that I connected to this blog and joined a few groups. I created a ping.fm account to link these blog posts to both Facebook and Twitter. And I was also in the Steven Covey Community online tonight trying to figure out what value that would have.
Do you think that’s enough? Oh, and I’m using Tweetdeck to try to manage reading all of the updates from Twitter and Facebook. I just realized I have like 12 tabs open in this Firefox session and a few in another one – I wonder how many is too much?
If this works my post to my blog – anlenterprises.com – should push out to twitter and facebook. I think I’m like most geeks and I’m professionally lazy – I’ll spend a lot of time working on things to avoid working on things. In this case I just wanted it to work correctly -so it would go where I want it to go. Of course – I ended up using 2 plug-ins for WordPress – “Tweet post” and “Status Updater” to set this up. I think the important thing is that good tools are very important to being effective and productive.
I also found this website to be useful – http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf2word/index.asp – as it converted a PDF page into an RTF document. I was needing to pull some content from a catalog page and didn’t want to type it in manually – this saved me some time – again -tools!
