I feel like I’m surrounded by the Mac OS now – I’m actually typing this on my Dads’s laptop and he has a mac now.  I know more people now than I ever did that have gotten a Mac and loved it.  I have an iPod and think about a Mac a lot – as my iPod works well.  I’m by no means a Mac lover – but I have great respect for what the company has done.  I don’t know if I will ever go to a Mac – but I think it’s a good option for a lot of people.

They make some great hardware – but I think that’s because that’s what they are – a hardware company.  I know that you don’t have to deal with the constant security updates like on Windows – that’s one area I’ve gotten pretty tired of (how many of you have come back to you computer wondering why it restarted and then it says “Your computer was recently updated…”  I don’t know if the Mac OS is just more secure or if the small number relative to windows is what’s important.

I do appreciate that Mac has come back – as it’s made all computers better.  Windows wouldn’t keep advancing like it has if Mac wasn’t biting at it’s heels.  Apple made some amazing progress by basing their OS on a Unix system and then switching to Intel chips.  My Dad actually uses the hardware more to run Windows than the Mac OS – he wanted a slim laptop to work with.

I’m frankly too cheap to buy a Mac – as I just don’t have a lot to spend so I keep a close eye on any money I have (I work my part-time biz for hardware/software).   I wonder a lot if my wife would like the Mac a lot better – but I also wonder what she would think of Windows 7.  I may have her look at both here in a minute to see what she thinks – then again she’s not into computers like I am (actually I’m getting addicted to the internet as much as a computer now…).

Windows 7

I’ve heard a lot lately about Windows 7 lately – and frankly a lot good.  I’ve seen some demos and find it intriguing to the point I’m tempted by it.  However, I did some research on my computers and neither of them are Windows 7 ready – largely due to the graphics cards not being powerful enough.   If I was buying a new computer I think I would go with Windows 7 – instead of sticking with windows XP – but I don’t think I’m going to update now.  The low cost of new computers is tempting – but maybe I should not spend money on something I don’t need (am I growing up?).

I have 2 computers – which means 2 upgrades – that would be clean installs.  I might have to update other software, etc. – which in total means a lot of work.  I’m probably like a lot of people in that they work good enough for what I need – so that it’s not worth the money and the effort to upgrade.  I know Windows XP is aging and I’m pretty tired of the constant security updates but I don’t think I want to do it.

That said, I think Microsoft may have done a better job on this one – with the long testing period to make sure it worked.  After the Vista fiasco they have an uphill battle to fight (I could never stomach upgrading to Vista) but they may have done their homework. Ironically Apple seems to have had more problems with it’s latest operating system than Microsoft has.  In a few years I won’t be surprised if I’m running Windows 7 – as one of my computers will probably need to be upgraded.
